Sexless couples really are an "elephant in the room" situation: those are seen as "normal" though they really aren't. I think it's a sign of a "sexophobic culture", where sex is considered dirty, wrong or - at best - scarcely important.

I think sex should be seen as a basic human need, on the same level as affection: without one or the other, we wilt and slowly die inside. And, if you willingly deny your partner affection or sex, you can't really say you love him / her.
