Good point about sitcoms. I'd say that in the last decades there has been a strong trend in TV to portray women as "right" or "wise", and the men as foolish or childish. Or, the funny "dumb" one would always be a man or boy (think Joey in Friends), never a woman or girl. A Dumb and Dumber movie with female protagonists would have likely caused an uproar.
This seems a by-product of a feminist mindset; or maybe those shows try to pander to a mostly female audience.
OTOH, shows that portrayed women as bad or evil (e.g. Two and a half men), were labelled as misogynist.
