I fully agree with your thesis, and I've seen some men chasing this impossible ideal of female perfection. Yes, such men exist - and their love life is often miserable.

OTOH:

1. I think most men do not fall for this trap. Yet you talk about "countless men". I do not deny your experience, but keep in mind that people going in therapy are the "troubled" ones, not representing their gender at large.

2. I'm pretty sure that this "pursuing the perfect mate" myth is more a female thing that a male one. After all, most women dream about their "Prince Charming": a common archetype on which countless novels and movies have been made. Men have no equivalent myth or archetype; you don't hear them talk about their "Princess", and Hollywood doesn't make rom-coms for men.

Therefore, I find it odd that you didn't even mention the "female side" of the myth you so eloquently wrote about. :-o

Since you're a therapist, maybe the words "denial" or "suppression" could be appropriate. ;-)
