I'm an Italian living in (Northern) Italy for the last 60 years.
I'd say the Mediterranean diet is quite close to real Italian food, although - of course - Italian regions might be quite diverse, and therefore their main foods.
In a sense, the Mediterranean diet is closer to what Italian ate in the past (say until the '70-80s?), when they were poorer, so less meat and more vegetables. But on average, it's not so far from most people eat here.
