IMO "white knights" are more about:

1. Mommy issues.

2. The (unconscious) hope that, by humbling themselves and celebrating women, they would be loved by them.

3. Being brainwashed by feminism (during the last 50 years at least) into self-shaming and the need to "redeem" themselves.
