Perhaps you forgot the prime reason of cheating: we really aren't a monogamous species (most mammals aren't as well, BTW).

Hence staying faithful in a long lasting monogamous relationship doesn't come naturally (we could do it, but it's hard work), while cheating it's second nature.

The problem is we lie to ourselves, believing that monogamy is our way and natural... and then we become horrified when cheating happens.
