The Doctor's advice is all good and valid, but if this woman has an "identity problem" ("I don't really know who I am") she might have identified with the mom role to compensate that: "I am a mom, therefore I have value and a purpose".
I've seen many moms do this. In these cases letting go of the children is really difficult, because without them the woman loses her identity as well as her role: "Who am I, now?!?". This can be terrifying, and of course it might be linked with depression.
If this is the case, I agree with DPM to see a therapist and explore the issues underneath.
