Or, the person who doesn't care (be it man or woman) is signalling s/he could do better (that's why s/he doesn't care much), therefore is "high value" (true or not doesn't matter - "the game is about perception", as you say).

OTOH the person who gives it all, is signalling "low value", neediness, desperation - thus is not attractive. That's why being "super romantic" is often counter-productive.
